TWO-DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR
TWO-DAY
NATIONAL SEMINAR
ON
GLOBALIZATION-TRIBAL
AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
ISSUES AND CHALLENGES
(Sponsored by UGC, New Delhi)
November 29-30, 2008
Organized by
DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
UNIVERSITY ARTS & SCIENCE COLLEGE
KAKATIYA UNIVERSITY WARANGAL, AP
About The Seminar: The process of
globalization and its various economic
reforms initiated in 90’s has affected socioeconomic
conditions of rural population in
general and tribes in particular. Still
agricultural sector provides employment to
about 65 percent of the population. It
contributes even today 27 percent of gross
domestic product. In a global agricultural
economy, small farms will be replaced by
large farms, which in turn will be controlled
by giant multinational corporations. Small
farmers quite simply will not be able to
compete in a “free market” global economy.
Agricultural sector is the mainstay of the
tribal and rural Indian economy around
which socio-economic privileges and
deprivations revolve, and any change in its
structure is likely to have a corresponding
impact on the existing pattern of social
equality. No strategy of economic reform
can succeed without sustained and broad
based agricultural development. There were
studies which show that the economic
liberalization and reforms process have very
much impact on tribal agricultural and rural
sectors. With this background the National
Seminar would focus on the impact of the
Globalization on Tribal Agricultural
Development, Issues and Challenges in
India. The following are the broad Themes:
I-Globalization Issues and Challenges
II-Tribal Land Issues
III-Tribal Agricultural Development
IV-Women in Tribal Economy
V-Development Agencies (ITDA, MADA,
GCC, DWAMA, DRDA, NGOs) Empowering
Tribes
Call for Papers:
In view of your expertise in the subject and
wide experience in the field, we request you
to contribute your research paper on any one
of the above themes. The abstract and full
length paper neatly typed in (MS-Word)
with double space in soft (CD) and hard
copy should reach to Dr. B. Suresh Lal,
Seminar Director, latest by 25th November-
2008.
The seminar however can gain more
meaningful and become more effective with
your participation as that adds one more
point of view to the whole spectrum of ideas
and views. It would also be a fruitful
experience for the participants, as the
seminar would resemble a miniature country
that would showcase the issues in different
parts of the country.

National Child Rights Research Fellowships 2009
National Child Rights Research Fellowships 2009
CRY - Child Rights and You, invites applications for research fellowships exploring multiple dimensions of child rights within the broad framework of justice for children. Whilst on the one hand, the Constitution of India redefines the state-citizen relationship in terms of rights and duties, on the other hand, there is a lot of ambiguity on how to interpret these rights and duties in terms of the best interest of the child principle as stated in regular parlance as well as in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). In the last six decades, children have been an integral part of the nation building project and its development path, as also the hard times as a consequence to the development path taken. One objective is to trace the identity formation of children as a potential force that defines various developmental processes, as also the descriptive analysis of how their childhood is lived in the context of changes that have been the characteristics of the institutions of family, community, society, economy and the state.
Potential fellows are welcome to expand and interpret the themes, based on their life experiences and vision. We encourage original ideas, non conventional approaches and seek creative methodologies intending to learn more about the interplay of culture, tradition, law, ethics and policy in defining the best interest principle.
Possible Focus Areas
Child rights in the context of disappearance and reinvention of traditions, customs, norms and mores; and as also the impact of emergence of new kinds of rural technologies and occupations.
Creativity and imagination, in the experience and expression of childhoods.
Evidences of the assertion or rejection of the role of children in various decision making arenas across spaces such as households, advertisements, political party campaigns to governing institutions.
Insights on children actively and passively amidst conflicts, violence and discrimination.
Reflect on constructions of childhood and the implications on children's rights.
Locating identity questions (language, discourse, representation) within the school-community relationship.
Is best interest principle, a value, a constitutional right, an interpretative advocacy instrument or a rule of law.
Principles governing the Fellowship
Eligibility: Indians residing in India, above the age of 18 years. There is no upper age limit. Preference will be given to applicants who have studied in government schools, where no fees are charged (CRY's experiential learning of working with over 2000 deprived communities in villages and slums demonstrates that students attending government schools are primarily Dalits, tribals, girls and children from female headed and/or landless households.)
It is expected that potential fellows ascribe to the CRY values:
-Respect for Human Dignity-Secularism-Non-Violence-Accountability-Innovation -Transparency-Working in Partnership
Language: Proposals may be submitted in any Indian language.
Grant Sizes: In all up-to 10 fellowships for grant sizes ranging from Rs.50,000 to Rs.1 lakh will be awarded. These will be support grants and fellows are free to continue their primary occupation or study programme. The proposals seeking grants of more than one lakh will not be reviewed.
Time Frame for Completion of Research Project: From one month to one year. Selected fellows are expected to participate in an initial workshop to share research plans and gain from the collective experience possibly in March / April 2009. They will also be expected to participate at a half yearly sharing meeting in September 2009 for which CRY will sponsor travel, boarding and lodging.
Dissemination: Research results will be made available to a broad audience of activists, academics, development practitioners and general public through multiple fora, including language translations to influence the course of the debate on child rights and the best interest principle.
Ownership: While fellows will retain authorship of the final research product, all information and insights gathered will be open access and available to the widest possible numbers, for no charge. Fellows will also be free to publish their research efforts, with appropriate acknowledgement of the National Child Rights Research Fellowship and CRY.
Requirements: Proposals must include the following.
A three-page proposal, that elaborates on scope, relevance, research question, conceptual framework, proposed methodology, time frame and detailed budget.
A two-page CV.
A sample of published or even unpublished work or any documentation done on a related theme is essential for the proposal to be reviewed.
Only Regional Language Proposals may also be sent by post to CRY Documentation Centre, CRY-Child Rights and You, 189 A, Anand Estate, Sane Guruji Marg, Mumbai 400011.
Proposals already part of a submission to any academic institution will be considered ineligible for this fellowship. It is expected that the potential fellow is not already receiving funding for conduct of the research proposed. In case during the course of the Fellowship, there is need to expand the scope and add greater depth, it is expected that CRY will be informed first about the need for additional funds. Also any other donors reached out to will be informed about CRY support for the principal work.
Last Date for receipt of application: October 28, 2008. Proposals will be reviewed as they are received. The names of researchers who are awarded the Fellowship 2009 will be announced on the CRY website latest by April 2009.

Training Course on
Research Methodology in Social Sciences
(September 9 to 18, 2008)
Sponsored by
Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi
____________________________________________________________________________________
Introduction
Social science research is characterized by a diversity of theoretical perspectives, substantive orientation, methodological strategies, data collection practices and data analysis techniques. This has made it necessary to provide further training and special courses of study on a continuing basis to college and university teachers and researchers to equip them with advanced methodological skills.
It has been observed that many researchers could not produce research works of high quality because they are either not in touch with the latest research tools and techniques or do not have proper orientation to use the traditional methods efficiently. The problem has further been aggravated by lack of opportunities for the social scientists to refine their methodological skills and to get insight in fresh areas of research in their respective fields. On the other hand the rapid advancement of knowledge in all disciplines of social sciences has made research an activity of solving problems, which adds new dimensions and generalizations on the basis of gathered empirical evidences.
Recognizing this need, Madhya Pradesh Institute of Social Science Research, Ujjain (MPISSR) is organizing a ten days Training Course on Research Methodology in Social Sciences from September 9 to 18, 2008 with the financial help of Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.

CALL FOR PAPERS for Presentations by Young Researchers at theInternational Conference on Development, Freedom and Welfare'in
The year 2008 marks Professor Amartya Sen’s 75th birthday. Professor Sen has made deep and lasting contributions to the academic disciplines of economics, philosophy, and the social sciences more broadly. He has engaged in policy dialogue and public debate, advancing the cause of a human development focused policy agenda, and a tolerant and democratic polity. This ‘Argumentative Indian’ has always spoken up for the needs of the poorest segments of society, and for the openness and plurality of cultures. He has won important awards, ranging from the Nobel Prize in Economics to the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. This public recognition has gone hand in hand with the affection and admiration that Professor Sen’s friends and students feel for him.
Clearly, a celebration is called for. We will be holding a conference in his honour on 19-20 December 2008, in New Delhi. The conference will be inaugurated by Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, and many of the world’s leading economists and social scientists will be present at the celebration. It will have three components:
1)
The launch of Arguments for a Better World: Essays in Honour of Amartya Sen a festschrift by leading economists and social scientists, edited by Kaushik Basu and Ravi Kanbur, to be published by Oxford University Press. Many of the authors will be present at the conference.
2)
Three Policy Panels, on India specific and global development issues. The panelists will be leading thinkers and policy makers from India and the World.
3)
Presentations by young economists and social scientists from India and around the world. We feel that this is particularly appropriate given Professor Sen’s own devotion to his students and to young social scientists in general. The presentations will be by young researchers selected from submissions to this Call for Papers, by an international committee of assessors.
The organizers invite submissions of papers by young researchers below the age of 40 years (preference will be given to younger researchers). A detailed abstract (about 1000 words) of the paper should be sent to senconference@gmail.com by 15 July 2008. However, the submission of full papers will be preferred. The selected candidates need to submit the full papers by 31 October 2008.

Policy and Systems Modelling Training Workshop
I would like to bring your attention to the following research training workshop
Systems analysis as applied to forest policy and management issues
Research Training Workshop, ENGREF, Nancy, France 19-21 June, 2008
This workshop is designed to provide an introduction to the important concepts in systems analysis and its application to forest policy and management issues. The workshop is designed particularly for young researchers, managers and policy makers, including postgraduate students, who have had limited exposure to policy research, systems thinking and modelling methods. However, it will also be useful for established researchers, including those who may administer rather than conduct projects.
The training workshop will be run in conjunction with the Small-scale Rural Forest Use and Management: Global Policies versus Local Knowledge International Symposium Gérardmer, France, 23-27 June 2008 organised under the auspices of IUFRO 3.08 Small-scale Forestry. The conference website is http://www.uq.edu.au/forestry/index.html. The training workshop follows on from a highly successful systems training workshop held in conjunction with the IUFRO 3.08 conference held in Ormoc, Philippines in June 2007.
Further details can be found in the attached document.
Registrations are due 1 April. To assist planning, potential participants are requested to contact Dr John Herbohn (j.herbohn@uq.edu.au) to indicate their interest in attending the workshop as soon as possible.
Kind regards
John
