Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD), Lucknow, India is a society established by National bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), India in 1983 as an apex level institute offering training, research and consultancy services on various aspects of agriculture, rural development and rural finance. BIRD has set up within its fold a Centre for Microfinance Research (CMR) to take up research activities in the field of microfinance for facilitating policy initiatives and improvements in design and delivery system of microfinance services. The Centre has established four sub centres at Indian Institute of Bank Management (IIBM), Guwahati, Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Chennai, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Jaipur and Chandragupt Institute of Management (CIM), Patna.



CMR is organising its 3nd National Seminar on Microfinance – Issues and Challenges at Lucknow on 01-02 December 2011. Microfinance practitioners, economists, bankers, policy makers and other stakeholders are expected to participate in the Seminar. For the purpose, papers on the broad themes mentioned below are invited from researchers/practitioners in the field of microfinance.



1. Regulatory challenges for client protection in microfinance

2. Enhancing outreach of microfinance: Role of Technology

3. Microfinance through co-operatives: Performance and prospects

4. Revival of rural artisans, handloom and handicraft cluster bases: Potential role of microfinance



Interested researchers/practitioners are requested to submit their papers, not exceeding 6000 words, latest by 30 August 2011. Abstracts not exceeding 200 words should also be submitted alongwith the papers. All papers will be reviewed for their suitability for presentation in the Seminar. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) was established by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the year 1987 as an advanced research Institute for the study of national and Global development issues. The Institute is recognized as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act and offers M.Sc. Programme in Economics, M.Phil/Ph.D and External Ph.D in Development Studies. The Institute is governed by a Board of Management (BoM) consisting of distinguished academicians and policy makers in the country. 1. Communications Manager cum Editor : 1 post

Qualification, Experience : The applicant must hold a Masters Degree, preferably in a communication related subject with specialization in Journalism from a reputed University with minimum 2 to 5 years of experience in field of communications and ability to demonstrate knowledge of a broad range of communication activities – media, websites, publications, marketing, social media, events etc. Proven and demonstrable experience of working with wide range of media, developing media strategies and relations, preparing press releases etc. Experience working with e-communications, including preparing and sending e-bulletins, supporter updates etc. Excellent writing and interpersonal skills including the ability to influence across the organization and externally.

Desirable: Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of oral and written communications and interpersonal relations skills in order to determine the most effective proposals.

2. Assistant Administrative Officer (HR): 1 post

1.Qualification, Experience : The applicant must be a Post Graduate / MBA in HR

Management. Should have demonstrated initiative, leadership and supervisory skills, strong communication skills in English (Both oral and written). Should have 2 to 5 years of experience in related areas or areas in which communication skill is demonstrated. AAO (HR) would be responsible for implementation of IGIDR’s approved HR and administrative policies and procedures.The incumbent has to actively interact with the Faculty, Administration and other staff members. He/she will provide leadership in ensuring equity and transparency in application of the policies.
3. Assistant Administrative Officer (Events and External Relations) : 1 post

a. Qualification, Experience : The applicant must have a Post graduate Degree. IARNIW was formed under the guidance of late Prof. V.K.R.V. Rao in 1964 to bring together contributions from scholars in the field of national income and allied subjects and the agencies responsible for compiling the national accounts. IARNIW encourages research in national income, wealth and allied fields by organizing seminars and conferences on various issues relating to estimation and compilation of national income in India. The research studies produced by the Association and papers presented at its conferences, seminars etc. are published in the journal of the Association.
Journal of Income and Wealth: The Journal of Income and Wealth is a biennial publication carrying research papers and studies relating to concepts, definitions and statistical measures of macro-economic aggregates at the national, sectoral and regional levels. The Journal publishes both refereed papers presented in the IARNIW seminars and conferences as well as contributions from scholars working in the field. The Journal is indexed in the Econ Lit and is available both in print and on-line.

Applications are invited for the Academic Writing and Publication Workshop for Research Students that will be held at Central University of Gujarat from November 16 to 20, 2010.
The workshop will be held in collaboration with ICSSR – Western Regional Centre and will offer research students in colleges and universities an opportunity to learn and discuss the techniques of research writing and publication.
The workshop will (i) help participants understand how to structure research papers effectively, (ii) enhance their ability to critique, edit and review their own work, and (iii) familiarize them with the academic publication process.
The themes that will be covered would include:

• Critiquing a manuscript- Different perspectives
• Information search
• Citation styles, using end notes and foot notes
• Analyzing data – qualitative and quantitative
• Preparing a manuscript for publication

Resource Persons: This workshop will be conducted by resource persons eminent in the field of social sciences who have experience in writing, editing and publishing research papers.
The workshop will be structured as an intensive mix of lectures and discussions. The focus will be on interactive participation.
Who Is Eligible? Students who have registered for M.Phil/Ph.D. in any university in the field of social sciences and who are preferably at the writing stage of their dissertation/thesis.
Applicants must submit one draft research paper or research proposal of about 2500 words to 4000 words (including footnotes/endnotes and references) that they have written along with their applications. Applications without the draft paper will not be considered.

Job Summary
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) or Research Fellow (RF) for a two (2) year, fixed term, renewable, exempt appointment for its office in New Delhi. This position is based at IFPRI -New Delhi located in India but would involve travel to any of the countries in which IFPRI carries out its research. The final grade level will be determined by demonstrated experience and track record of publications. Please note that Postdoctoral Fellow appointments at IFPRI have a maximum term of three (3) years, inclusive of any approved appointment extensions.
The PDF/RF will work on the issues related to agribusiness in emerging modern value chains, especially those in fruits and vegetables, animal products, poultry, fishery and other high-value agricultural sectors. The PDF/RF will be responsible for developing projects related to the study of changing food systems in Asia, with focus on South and south-east Asia. The PDF/RF will study the implications of such fast changing food systems on small farmers and women, and other poor households, and designing policies that can help them to exploit these emerging opportunities. The work will involve developing a clear conceptual framework for understanding possible channels of impact, organizing field research in the region (including farm surveys and interviews with various participants in the food marketing channel), data analysis, preparation of research reports and dissemination of the results of policy makers and other stakeholders in the region.

APPLICATION FOR VISITING STUDENTS PROGRAM 2010
As part of its outreach activities, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is seeking applications for the Visiting Students Programme 2010.
Visiting Students Programis meant to provide a taste of economics research for Masters (M.A., M.B.A., M.Com., M.Sc. and M.Stat.) and final year engineering (B.E., B.Tech.) students of other Colleges/Institutes/Universities.
Eligibility: For those pursuing their Master's in Economics, eligibility for this program is at least at Second Division at their Bachelor's level. For students of other disciplines, eligibility is a First Division in their previous degree obtained (For B.E./B.Tech. students, the performance in the first three years or whatever is available will also be taken into consideration).
Selection would be based on a statement of purpose of one page (about 300 words curriculum vitae and recommendation letter from their College/Institute/University with communication details of the concerned authority.
Emoluments: Selected participants will be paid Rs.4000/- per month, to and fro second-class train fare and allowed to stay at IGIDR for a period of four-to-eight weeks at a stretch, any time during the year. During their stay they would be provided free accommodation at IGIDR.
Faculty guidance and visit time: Selected students would be assigned a faculty member for guidance although they are free to interact with all the faculty members and students. The time of visit to be decided by the participant in consultation with the faculty s/he is assigned with, but this has to be done within the calendar year of 2010.
Requirement: At the end of the stay, the participant is required to submit a report (self-study or survey of issues among others). The report will be archived at IGIDR. Further academic outcomes from the stay should be duly acknowledged and the same intimated to IGIDR.
Foreign studentsare also encouraged to apply. However, in such cases there would be no financial commitment by the institute. The institute may provide local hospitality.

The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) invites applications for its two-month course on 'Researching the Contemporary'. This cross-disciplinary course will critically examine the formation of the contemporary and its multiple histories, ideologies, forms and affects. A focus on three thematic areas will enable participants to familiarize themselves with concepts and theories that help analyse the contemporary. These include:

History, Memory, Identity
Capital, Consumption, Markets
This course aims to have participants reflect upon and further develop their research questions and methods. This is an intensive course with compulsory readings and class discussions. Course materials will be made available. Participants are expected to write research papers upon completion. A participation certificate will be awarded upon successful completion. The course will be conducted over 8 weeks between July 1-August 31, 2010. Classes will be held at CSDS on week-day afternoons, Tuesday to Thursday, from 3-5pm.

The Institute has created Professor P R Brahmananda Endowment Research Fund with a donation from his family members. The Endowment Research Corpus will be utilised to award research grant to young researchers working in Monetary and Macro Economics. As decided by the Board of Governors of the Institute, this year's research award will be given to a research work focusing on "The History of Monetary Policy in India Since Independence".
Interested young researchers are invited to send in their proposals for writing the Paper on the theme chosen for the year or submit completed paper, for consideration. The Institute will offer a research award of Rs.35,000/- for the best judged work which can be published in the Journal of Social and Economic Development or any other reputed refereed Journal. The author will have freedom to publish it elsewhere with due acknowledgement to the Institute and the Fund. National Child Rights Research Fellowships 2009-10
Childhood in India is not uniformly experienced; infact several childhoods co-exist: childhoods of social and economic status, physical and mental ability as well as geographical location to name a few. Respecting children as sovereign, equal members is a step towards recognising their voices in defining their best interest as participants and not just mute beneficiaries.
Child Rights and You (CRY) welcomes applications exploring the various dimensions of child rights, the best interest principle, within the constitutional framework of Justice for Children.
We seek new ideas, a combination of formal and informal approaches to explore and discover, simple and complex truths about the interplay of culture, laws, ethics and policies determining childhoods.
Possible Focus Areas
You are welcome to expand and interpret the themes, based on your life experiences and vision.
Creativity and imagination, in the experience and expression of childhoods, researching stories, folk songs, poems, as metaphors social interactions
Explorations of the relationships of the child with other children, with the State, community and the family
Evidences of assertion or rejection of the role of children in decision making arenas such as home, school, work and play spaces and governing institutions
Gather evidence on relationships between ethnicity, inequality and conflict as witnessed and/or experienced by children v Is best interest principle a value, a constitutional right, an interpretative advocacy instrument or a rule of law ?
Principles governing the Fellowship
Eligibility: Applicants will be Indians residing in India, above the age of 18 years. Those previously awarded this fellowship are ineligible. Preference will be given to applicants who have studied in government schools, where no fees are charged. (Studies conducted and CRY's experiential learning of working with over 2000 deprived communities in villages and urban slums demonstrates that students attending government schools are primarily Dalits, tribals, girls and children from female headed and/or landless households.)

Language: Applicants, may choose to work in any Indian language including English. Please clearly indicate the language you plan to work with. As assessment of the application will be conducted, both in English and your working language. Please include an English translation of the proposal, CV and work sample.
Grant Sizes: Upto 10 fellowships for grant sizes ranging from Rs.50,000 to Rs.1 lakh will be awarded. These will be support grants and fellows are free to continue their primary occupation. Proposals above one lakh will not be reviewed.
Essential requirements:
A three-page proposal, which briefly explains your topic of study, outlines the research question within a framework, proposed methodology, time schedules, a reading list of related literature/existing studies on the subject and a detailed budget
A two-page CV
A sample of your published or unpublished paper/article or any documentation done on a related theme.
Proposals whose duration exceeds a year will not be reviewed
Selected fellows will participate in an initial workshop to share research plans and gain from the collective experience (closer to March 2010) and will also participate at a half-yearly sharing meeting. Short-listed applicants will have opportunity to share their ideas and future plans, in conversation with members of the CRY assessment team.
Dissemination: Research results will be made available to activists, academics, development practitioners and interested general public through multiple fora, including language translations to influence the course of the debate on child rights and the best interest principle.
Ownership: While fellows will retain authorship of the final research report and content, all information and insights gathered will be open access and available to the widest possible numbers, for no charge. Fellows are free to publish the insights of their research efforts, with appropriate acknowledgment to the National Child Rights Research Fellowship and CRY.
If your proposal is part of a submission to any academic institution it will be ineligible for this fellowship as also if the fellow is already receiving funding for conduct of the research proposed. In case during the course of the Fellowship, the fellow feels the need to expand the scope and add greater depth, it is expected that CRY will be informed first about the need for additional funds. Also any other donors reached out to will be informed about CRY support for the principal work.
